Using AI in Weather Forecasts to Improve Weather Predictions in India

Recent years have seen stronger and more dangerous weather clashes in India because of global warming. These clashes cause extreme events that have harmed around 3,000 people this year, as estimated by the Centre for Science and Environment. AI helps predict such weather changes.

Elevating Safety Through AI in Weather Forecasts

In India, they’re trying out artificial intelligence (AI) to make better predictions about the weather. The weather patterns, like heavy rains, floods, and droughts, have been causing problems. The country is facing more severe weather events because of global warming. This is where AI comes in, helping to create better climate models for accurate weather forecasts. The Centre for Science and Environment estimates that these extreme weather events have led to nearly 3,000 deaths this year. It’s all about using AI in weather forecasts to keep people safer.

Weather organizations worldwide are using AI for better forecasts. It helps save money and makes predictions faster. The UK’s Met Office thinks AI could change weather forecasts completely. They tested a Google-supported AI model. It worked better than traditional ways. This AI in weather forecasts is a big step. It helps predict the weather more accurately. The goal is to improve forecasts while reducing costs. AI’s potential to transform weather predictions has caught the attention of experts. They believe it could make forecasting much more precise, changing how we predict weather events like floods or droughts.

Accurate weather prediction holds immense significance in India, a nation with a population of 1.4 billion, including a significant number of impoverished individuals. Furthermore, India stands as the second-largest global producer of rice, wheat, and sugar.

Harnessing AI in Weather Forecasts for Enhanced Precision and Cost Efficiency

The weather department is making smart computer models and advice using AI, aiming to make better predictions. K.S. Hosalikar, who leads climate research at IMD, said these new AI tools will help improve forecasts. He told Reuters that they’re hopeful about the AI in weather forecast, believing it will enhance their ability to predict weather changes like floods and droughts.

The weather office is using AI to warn people about heatwaves and diseases like malaria. Hosalikar mentioned they want more observatories to gather weather details, even down to villages. This might give better and more detailed forecasts using AI in weather forecasting. The plan is to have more data, especially from smaller areas, so they can predict the weather more accurately. AI helps them make alerts and predictions, and by collecting more information from villages, they aim to make these predictions even better for everyone’s safety.

The government plans to use AI to make better weather predictions. They’ve set up a special center to try this idea. This center will organize workshops and conferences to test how AI can improve the regular weather predictions we rely on.

Their goal is to make forecasts about weather and climate more accurate by adding AI to the usual ways we predict these things. This change hopes to bring better insights and more reliable information for everyone relying on weather forecasts. The center will experiment with different methods to see how AI can enhance our understanding of weather patterns.

Saurabh Rathore, an assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, explained that using AI for weather forecasting doesn’t need an expensive supercomputer. Instead, a good desktop computer can handle the AI model’s tasks. This means you don’t have to spend lots of money on a high-powered computer to make AI work for predicting weather conditions. Rathore emphasized how AI in weather forecasting is more accessible, as it doesn’t necessarily require costly infrastructure, like supercomputers, and can operate efficiently on regular desktop computers.

Experts say that to fully utilize AI, it is crucial to have improved data.

Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, a scientist studying weather, mentioned that making AI predict weather better in specific places needs detailed data about time and space. Without this detailed data, improving existing forecasts using AI for specific areas won’t work well. He said this while working at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. This means that for AI to be really good at predicting weather in specific spots, it needs a lot of detailed information about time and space.
